Author's life
http://khaledhosseini.com/
Hosseini has lived the life of a stereotypical Afghan. His family was relocated to Paris in 1976 and returned to in 1980. Kabul had just witnessed a communist coup and the Hosseini's found refuge in the United States. With his father being a diplomat in Afghan Foreign Ministry, Khaled had a good idea of relations abroad (Khaled Hosseini). Although he was not writing his book during that time in his life, he used what was going on during his childhood to write A Thousand Splendid Suns. He uses the role of women during that time to show people what it was like for them during that time and what they went through. He shows the strength and heartache that some of these girls, and people in general, endured. He gives perspective on communism within a country that keeps readers on the edge of their seat.
Author/character comparison
I believe that Khaled finds himself most as Laila. Laila is a girl who wants the best for everyone. She is smart and mature for her age and sees what is happening around her. Khaled is a well educated man who wants people to be who they are and know what is happening to them. She doesn't want to hurt people and neither does Khaled. They both want to help those in need and be apart of working for the better. Both of them were around during communism inside their country. They both have moved around and dreamed of a better future for themselves. Lucky for both of them, their parents were there to protect them during their most vulnerable stages and only wanted the best for them. Both of them hope for a better future for themselves and want it for everyone else. Laila is the girl that you look to in the times of crisis, and this is Khaled. He's endeavoured a lot in his life and wants to help others to find peace.
